Power Scenario in the State
In 1930 Electricity was first introduced in the state of Manipur with the commissioning of two micro hydel power stations having capacities of 100 KW and 56 KW. Till the end of first Five Year Plan The capacity remained the same . Between Imphal and An Leimakhong 11 KV transmission line was commissioned to evacuate power from these power stations. To serve the limited number of consumers the state had only 26 km of 11 KV lines and 45 km of domestic lines to.
The peak load demand of Manipur was only 3.6 MW in 1971. This demand of electricity was met from the State’s own generating stations and power purchased from the neighbouring States/Electricity Boards at low voltage. The demand was low till the year 1980. The circumstances changed after the state started Majority power purchase from Assam. This was facilitated with the commissioning of 132 KV inter-state transmission line from Imphal to Dimapur, 132/33 KV sub-station at Yurembam in December 1981. Further, the situation was lightened with the commissioning of NHPC’s Loktak Hydro Electric Project in 1984 having a capacity of 105 MW (3×35).
